In the season’s first meeting between the Lady Wildcats and the Lady Gators, Lexington squeaked out a 72-68 victory. On Thursday evening on their home floor, the Cats entered the 3rd quarter leading by just 2 points but outscored the Gators 37-14 the rest of the way to claim back-to-back Region championships.
The win was Lexington’s 7th straight and 9th in the last 10 games. They will open the 5A state playoffs at home on Tuesday night at 7:00.
Sophomore Alexis Sexton hit 5-three pointers on her way to a game-high 20 points. Jenna Yanity scored 14 for the Wildcats. Eighth-grader Samira Khalil led the Gators with 13.
Lexington finished the regular season with 15 wins and 8 losses. They were 7-1 in Region 5. The Region-clinching win was also number 90 for Wildcat head coach Molly Goodrich against just 41 losses (.687) in her 5 years at Lexington. Her teams have won nearly 75% of Region games as they have gone 38-13. The success so far this season comes on the heels of losing 7 seniors from the 2018-19 season which culminated in a Lower State Championship appearance.
