Lexington captured both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon against a strong Charlotte Christian squad. They did it in dramatic fashion with both wins coming on walk-offs.
In Game 1, the Wildcats got off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Knights of Charlotte Christian scored 3 in the second and added single runs in the third and fifth innings. Facing a 5-2 deficit in the deciding at bat, Wells Sykes led off with a double and scored when Ryan Toll followed with a triple. Nathan Hall singled to left to bring Toll home and close the gap to 5-4. Blake Knight doubled to right field and with no outs and down by 1, Lexington had runners at second and third when Cole Long was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A throwing error by the Knight pitcher allowed 2 runs to cross and gave the Wildcats a 6-5 win in the opener. In relief of starter Cole Long, Will McFarland picked up the win.
Game 2 was a back and forth affair with Lexington leading after one inning 3-2. A Charlotte Christian homerun to left field tied the game in the third inning but the Cats answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on back-to-back doubles off the bats of Knight and Long. Charlotte Christian again took the lead in the final inning on a single and a double. In their last at bat, Lexington was knotted in a 4-4 ballgame when Nathan Hall stepped up to the plate to lead off the inning. On a 1-1 pitch, Hall blasted a towering homer to left-center field to give his team the second walk-off win in just a few hours. Blake Knight, who relieved Cal Herndon on the mound, picked up the win.
Lexington is now 9-1 overall as they prepare to play in the SC Diamond Invitational beginning Wednesday. Their opponents for the first 3 games will be Blythewood (Wednesday), Westwood (Thursday), and TL Hanna (Friday). Region play resumes on Monday April 12 when the Wildcats host co-Region 5 leader Dutch Fork.
