One year ago, in the 1st round of the 5A state basketball playoffs, the Lady Wildcats suffered an upset at the hands of the James Island Trojans. On Monday evening, Lexington played well on both the offensive and defensive ends and eliminated West Ashley by a final score of 58-38.
The blue and gold Wildcats got off to a quick start with junior Alexis Sexton netting the first 10 points for the home team. West Ashley continued to challenge Lexington, briefly pulling within 3 points in the 3rd quarter. But in the final frame, they were held to just a 3-pointer and a single free throw as Lexington scored 15 to close out the win.
Sexton led her team with 30 points. Her Wildcat career total now stands at 799 points. Jenna Yannity added 16 with Lindsay Garner posting 6 points along with a solid rebounding night.
With the win, Lexington advances to Round 2 and will host Wando this Thursday. The Warriors eliminated the Sharks of St. James, 44-33. Tipoff this Thursday is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
