Boys Varsity Football · Wildcats Roar in Region Opener, 45-27

Region play opened Friday with the Wildcats hosting the undefeated White Knoll Timberwolves on Hall of Fame Night.  It was an action-packed contest as the Cats posted 45 points, 35 of those in the second half as they downed the T-Wolves 45-27.

On the opening possession of the game, Elijah Ogden connected with Jayden Geiger on a 47- yard touchdown pass to take the early lead.  But White Knoll star and D1 commit Aveon Smith quickly answered as he scored on a 41-yard run to tie the game at 7 apiece.

Early in the 2nd quarter it was Smith again figuring in on a score as he passed to DeAree Rogers for a 72-yard scoring strike and a 14-7 lead.  As time ran out in the 1st half, Brady Bolin brought the Cats to within 14-10 as he was good on a 41 yard field goal.

Lexington was off to a quick start in the 2nd half when Aveon Smith’s fumble was recovered by Novean Mitchell at the White Knoll 38.  Five straight runs by Taylor Mathias took the Wildcat to the end zone and gave them a 17-14 lead.  Minutes later on the 8th play of the Timberwolf’s ensuing drive, Smith took to the air again for a 34-yard touchdown pass to Darius Derrick-Jones as the lead swung back to White Knoll 20-17 after Coleman Vancoutren blocked the extra point attempt.  On the play, Smith was down with a knee injury and was unable to return to action.

The lead swung again minutes later, when Ahmad Bynem-Scott got loose for a 33-yard touchdown run, as the Cats took command, 24-20.  After the Wildcat defense held the Timberwolves to a 3-and-out, the offense continued their productivity.  With the help a 65 yard run by Taylor Mathias 2 plays earlier, Ahmad Bynem-Scott scored on a handoff from the 8 yard line and Lexington had a 2-score lead, 31-20.

In the homestretch, the Wildcats added 2 more touchdowns, the first with 5:56 left in the game as Elijah Ogden went deep to Jayden Geiger again, this time for a 45-yard scoring pass.  Then on the following possession Lexington kept it on the ground, going to junior Carlton Finney for runs of 10, 20, 9, and a 1-yard plunge, his first career touchdown.  With 1:31 remaining, White Knoll tacked on 7 as Donovan Johnson raced 48-yards to the end zone.

Elijah Ogden completed 11 of his 18 passes for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Taylor Mathias ran 17 times for 167 yards and 2 TD’s.  Ahmad Bynem-Scott added 89 yards on 19 rushes and 2 scores.

With the win, Lexington improves to 6-1 and more importantly is 1-0 in Region 5.  After a bye week, they will travel to Dutch Fork.
