In Game 1 of the 5A State Championship series on Monday, Byrnes exploded for 9 runs in the 6th inning to erase a big Wildcat lead and claim the win. On Wednesday at Lexington, facing strong pitching and a solid defensive effort, the big inning didn’t happen for the Rebels as they were held to just 1 run.
Before an overflow crowd, the Lady Wildcats scored 2 in the opening frame and added another run in the 2nd inning as senior Hannah Kumiyama hit a solo shot to left-center field, her 16th of the season. The Cats tacked on 2 more in the 4th inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The Rebel score came in the top of the 5th on a homerun.
With the series tied at a game apiece, Lexington and Byrnes will play for the championship on Friday evening at a neutral site to de determined by the SC High School League on Thursday morning. The Wildcats last won a softball state title 18 seasons ago.
