For the first time since 2001, Lexington is headed to the State Championship finals after winning the Lower State title Friday evening. They will begin play Monday evening at Byrnes, the Upper State champs. Game 2 will be back at Lexington on Wednesday.
It was a strong start against the Ashley Ridge Swamp Foxes. AR led off the game with a single to right field but nothing materialized as Lexington starting pitcher Allie Light and her defense forced 3 straight outs. The Foxes would not get another hit until the 7th inning.
After 1 out in the home half of the 1st, Hannah Kumiyama doubled to right field. Sarah Gordon followed with a two-bagger to left, scoring Kumiyama. Allie Light singled to center, allowing Gordon to cross and giving the Cats a 2-0 lead.
In the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings, the pitchers took control. Only 1 runner reached base, a Lady Fox who took advantage of a dropped 3rd strike. After another 1-2-3 inning for Light and the Wildcats in the top of the 5th, Lexington manufactured an insurance run.
With 1 out, Saige Stanley was hit by a pitch and moved to 2nd on Alyssa McCraw’s single. After a fielder’s choice out, Hannah Kumiyama singled, scoring McCraw to give the Cats a 3-0 lead.
Down to their last at-bat, Ashley Ridge managed a hit in the 7th inning but Allie Light struck out the next batter to end the game with her 9th K.
Lexington extended their winning streak to 16 games, the last loss occurring on March 29 when they were edged in a late comeback by White Knoll.
