Lexington earned a critical win in the Lower State Championship Bracket on Friday evening as they opened play with a 4-2 decision over Ashley Ridge. They will travel to South Florence on Monday for a winner’s bracket game at 6:00.
The Lady Wildcats put 2 runs on the board in the 1st inning. With 2 out, Allie Light reached on a dropped third strike which scored Jaci Fleming who had earlier singled. Peri Rouillard followed with a double, scoring Cassidy St. George, the courtesy runner for Light.
Ashley Ridge took advantage of 2 Lexington errors in the 2nd inning after 2 were out to tie the game at 2 runs apiece.
Lexington answered immediately in the top of the third. With 2 outs, Hannah Kumiyama drew a walk on a 3-1 pitch. Catcher Sarah Gordon homered to left field, her 4th long ball of the season, and the Cats were up 4-2.
The Swamp Foxes loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with none out, but Allie Light struck out the next three batters in succession on just 10 pitches. She would record 12 K’s in the game.
Neither team mounted a scoring threat after the 3rd inning as Lexington earned their 22nd win of the season against just 3 losses. Ashley Ridge moves to the loser’s bracket to play in an elimination bracket game against Cane Bay on Monday. In District play last week, Cane Bay eliminated White Knoll, the 5A defending state champion.
