The Lady Wildcats accomplished something Monday night that has eluded the program for 40 years. For the first time since the state champion season of 1979, they are headed to the Lower State Final. The Cats eliminated the Trojans of James Island, 67-50.
Immediately after the opening tip, the James Island netted 2 quick buckets to get off to a 4-0 lead. Lexington responded with a 9-0 run and maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. Olivia Thompson was defended effectively in the 1st half and limited to 5 points. As the 2nd half began, she buried a long three to give her team a 12 point lead. It was a sign of things to come as Thompson netted 19 in the 2nd half for a game total of 24 points. Fellow seniors Brooke Foulks added 19 while Hannah Kumiyama scored 13.
The win was the 11th straight for the Wildcats. They improved their overall season record to 24-4. It was the final game on the home floor for an accomplished senior class: Olivia Thompson, Cassidy Bouknight, Devonia Monroe, Decaria Monroe, Hannah Kumiyama, Brooke Foulks, and Claire Tarlton.
Up next is a trip to the Florence Civic Center to face Goose Creek (21-1) with hopes of punching a ticket to the 5A State Final on March 1st at Colonial Life Arena. The semifinal matchup is scheduled for 5:00 this Saturday.
