The Region 5 championship game between Lexington and Dutch Fork tipped off at 7:00 Friday evening on the neutral floor of River Bluff. Immediately, Olivia Thompson hit a long three-pointer. Then another. Then one more. Brooke Foulks added a layup. Suddenly, just 3 minutes into the game, the Wildcats were up 11-0. Although the Silver Foxes would chip away at the lead on several occasions, the Cats clawed their way to a 12 point win, 49-37, and claimed the Region title.
Lexington and Dutch Fork split their 2 previous meetings. The Foxes edged the Wildcats 53-50 on January 15. The Cats responded with an easy victory on February 1 with a 45-31 decision.
Friday night’s win gave Lexington their first outright Region championship since 2000. They were co-champs in 2015. The ladies are now set to host West Florence in Round 1 of the state 5A playoffs on Tuesday at 7:00.
Olivia Thompson finished with 21 points. She has now scored 1,850 points as a Wildcat. Brooke Foulks was strong again on the boards while adding 6 buckets and another 7 of 9 from the free throw line for a total of 19.
Lexington finishes the regular season with an overall record of 21-4 as they look to make a run in the post-season.
