The stage was set on Tuesday evening for an epic battle between two of the states best basketball teams and fan bases. In front of a electric, capacity crowd, Lexington built an early lead with quick points from Mason Carver and Joe Long. Early in the 2nd quarter, Will Edwards hit a 3-pointer. It would be the 1st of 4 on the evening, with the last 3 contributing to the ultimate outcome. By halftime the Wildcats were in command, 29-13.
The momentum shifted immediately at the outset of the 2nd half. With the help of 9 points from JT Reeves and 6 from Andrew Robinson, the Gators shaved the lead to just a single point, 35-34 at the 2 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. The Cats did not let this crucial Region game slip away though. Edwards netted 3 threes and was perfect in 4 trips to the line for 13 points. Carver hit all 6 of his free throws. Jonathan Corley added timely rebounds and 5 points as Lexington outscored River Bluff 25-15 in the final frame and claimed the first of 2 meetings with the Gators, 68-52. The teams will faceoff again on February 7th at River Bluff.
Mason Carver led all scorers with 24 points. He also contributed 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. The Gators’ JT Reeves totaled 17 points in the loss.
The Cats will host White Knoll this Friday for Senior Recognition Night. Lexington was victorious in the first meeting on January 8 by a 58-49 final.
