In the championship game of the Hilton Sandestin Beach Blast, Lexington got off to a dominating start but it took a late comeback to claim the title and return home on New Years Day with hardware for the trophy case.
The title game featured the Wildcats and the Cavaliers of Cookeville High School, located midway between Knoxville and Nashville in Tennessee. Both teams won all 3 games in their brackets of the 16-team field to advance to the finale. At the outset, it looked like a Lexington blowout in the making. The Cats scored 31 points in the 1st quarter on the strength of 8 three-pointers, 4 coming from Mason Carver, 2 from Will Edwards, and another hit by Ryan Green. They would build a lead of as many as 19 in the first half. The Cavs, however would not throw in the towel and battled back to tie the game in the 4th quarter. But Lexington, as they had done in all their 14 previous games this season, would pull out the wi, their 15th straight, by a final score of 67-64.
Mason Carver was named Most Valuable Player of entire tournament, scoring 83 points, a 21 point-per-game average. Carver’s career point total at Lexington now stands at 881 as he edges closer to joining the elusive “1000-point club.” Will Edwards and Bradley Foulks took home “All Tournament” honors.
Lexington (15-0) is back on the court this week for 2 games before beginning Region 5 play next week. They will host the Queensland Boomerangs, an Australian travel team this Thursday at 7:30 PM and will meet the Clinton Red Devils at Presbyterian College Saturday at 7:00 PM.
