It’s a new school record! Lexington has now begun the season with 13 straight wins, surpassing a start of 12 back in 2005. On Friday in the second round of the Hilton Sandestin Beach Blast, the Cats scratched out a hard-fought, 68-56 win over the William Blount Governors of Maryville, Tennessee.
After the final buzzer, Coach Bailey Harris commented, “They shot lights out early but we kept battling and got a lead late in the 3rd and put it away in the 4th.”
Midway through the 3rd quarter, Blount continued to be hot from the field, hitting 10 three-pointers in the game and Lexington found themselves down 50-41. The Cats went on a 13-2 run from there to take a 54-52 lead into the final period. They played a suffocating defense, holding the Governors scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the 4th. Blount would get only a layup and 2 free throws in the homestretch while Lexington scored 14 points to move on to the tournament’s semi-final game. They will face Highlands High School from Highlands, KY tomorrow at 3:00 PM.
Leading the Wildcats was Mason Carver with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Ryan Green scored 15. Bradley Foulks contributed 12 points, 10 assists, and 5 steals.
Coach Harris was pleased with how his team faced a tough test. “We showed a lot of toughness and competitiveness tonight. Down 9, we battled back with contributions from a lot of guys.”
After the semi’s on Saturday, the field of 16 teams will take a day of rest on Sunday and play the championship and consolation games on Monday.
