Approaching halftime at Chapin, both teams were struggling on offense. The Eagles had put up 3 points on Alex Nelson’s 35 yard field goal. That was all for both teams. Then the tide turned with just 34 seconds left until the break. Tristan Allen added another pick to his team-leading total. He intercepted a Roger Pedroni pass and advanced it to the Chapin 19 yard line. Cal Herndon’s pass was complete to Nathan Baxley as he got out of bounds with 5 seconds remaining. From there, Baxley caught a 3-yard touchdown pass to give his team the lead at 7-3.
In the first half, both teams totaled just 99 yards of total offense each. Lexington’s star running back, Akeem Nicholas was held to 8 yards on the ground, but he would have lots of success the rest of the way.
Late in the 3rd quarter, Lexington engineered a 10 play, 83 yard scoring drive to make it a two-score difference. On the possession, Nicholas rushed for 40 yards. Cal Herndon was 4 for 4 passing for 46 yards.
Chapin was only able to add another field goal as Lexington won the important Region game and punched their ticket to the post-season. The Cats are now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Region play. They will host River Bluff this Friday on Senior Night and with a win, will earn a home playoff game.
