In the Region 5 opener, White Knoll turned the ball over 4 times on fumbles. Lexington capitalized on 3 of those by posting 21 points. In contrast, the Wildcats protected the ball all evening and generated 435 yards of total offense en-route to a 42-21 victory.
Midway through the 1st quarter, Alex Reed forced a fumble off Tristan Allen’s punt to give Lexington the ball at the White Knoll 16 yard line. Four plays later, junior Ahmad Bynem-Scott found the end zone on a 1 yard plunge to give the Cats an early 7-0 lead.
The evening would feature big runs from Bynem-Scott, quarterback Cal Herndon, and newcomer to the backfield, Taylor Mathias, as the feature back, Akeem Nicholas missed the game due to illness.
With just over a minute left in the 1st quarter, Bynem-Scott was off to the races with a 50-yard run that gave his team the ball at the White Knoll 30. On a 4th and 4 play, Cal Herndon connected with his older brother, Elliott on a 24-yard touchdown pass to give Lexington a 14-0 lead.
After a Timberwolf 3-and-out, the Wildcats lit up the scoreboard again on a 3-play drive that was capped off with a 53- yard quarterback keeper as the lead ballooned to 21-0.
With time ran out in the 1st half, White Knoll stayed alive as they moved the ball 84 yards on 11 plays and went to the locker room down just 2 scores, 21-7.
The turning point of the contest occurred early in the 3rd quarter. After scoring on their opening possession, the T-Wolves executed a successful onside kick but fumbled the ball on the first play from scrimmage and turned it over to the Cats on the Lexington 39. On 3rd down and 4, Cal Herndon found brother Elliott again, this time on a 55-yard strike and the game was no longer in doubt.
White Knoll turned it over again on their next possession and the Wildcats turned it into points. They added to the lead as Taylor Mathias ran for 48, 2, and 12-yards before taking a handoff 1 yard for his 1st Wildcat touchdown.
Junior quarterback Aveon Smith cashed in on keepers totaling 78 yards to give the Timberwolves a late score as the final was 42-21 in favor of Lexington.
