With 2:35 left in the first quarter of the 5A first round playoff game Tuesday evening, the Wildcats had an 18-3 lead on the Braves of Socastee High School. Just as it looked like a blowout in the making, the Lady Braves scored 8 straight points as the quarter ended with Lexington up 18-12. It would be a fight the rest of the way.
Three-pointers from Olivia Thompson and Alanna Langford in the second quarter allowed Lexington to build a 36-29 lead at the halftime break. But the Braves were on fire as the third quarter began. First an easy layup, then a three-ball, then two more scores and suddenly the Cats were down by 2 points. Olivia answered with a critical three-pointer to give Lexington a 39-38 lead. Five points each from twin sisters Ayanna and Alanna Langford allowed the Wildcats to take a 7 point lead to the fourth quarter, where they held on against the scrappy Braves for a 58-52 win.
In the game, Socastee went to the free throw line 31 times, making only 14. Lexington struggled from the stripe as well, hitting only 6 of 14.
The Lady Wildcats are now 16-9 as they travel to Goose Creek this Friday for a second round game against the Lady Gators who are 21-2 this season. Goose Creek defeated Lexington in Round 2 last year.
Lexington Scorers: Olivia Thompson 19, Alanna Langford 14, Ayanna Langford 11, Chelsea Davis 7, Brooke Foulks 7.
