Over the holidays, Lexington bested an 8-team field en route to winning the championship game of the Modie Risher Classic at Burke High School in Charleston.
Modie Risher was a coach and educator at Burke for more than 3 decades, having graduated from there in 1946. He passed away last year at the age of 88. The annual classic was named for Risher in the mid 1970’s.
The Cats opened play on Wednesday, December 27 against Baptist Hill. They quickly built a lead and cruised to a 45-33 win. Mason Carver led with 19 points. Bradley Foulks added 9.
On Thursday the 28th, Lexington faced Stall from North Charleston and shot for 70 points in a 21 point win. Mason Carver was the high scorer with 31 points.
In the championship game on Friday, The Wildcats edged a tough May River team, 37-32. They were forced to come from behind as the Sharks led 17-16 at the half and 27-24 after three quarters. Lexington overpowered their opponents 13-5 in the final quarter to claim the championship.
Junior Ryan Green and senior Tyler Reed were named to the All-Tournament team while junior Mason Carver earned Most Valuable Player honors.
Lexington is now 10-5 overall and will host Saluda Wednesday evening at 7:30.
Meanwhile the Lady Wildcats won 2 of 3 games in the Island Bracket of the Carolina Invitational held at First Baptist School in Charleston.
On Thursday, December 28, Lexington defeated Centreville High School of Virginia by a 65-54 margin. They fell to Providence Day of Charlotte the following day 56-44 but rebounded with of 69-60 victory over Stall to secure 3rd place in their bracket.
Junior Olivia Thompson earned All-Tournament recognition.
The Lady Wildcats are 8-5 overall and are in action at home against Saluda on Wednesday evening with tipoff at 6:00 PM.
