Girls Varsity Golf · Dynasty: Cats Win 12th State Title!

On Tuesday, at the Country Club of Lexington, Lady Wildcat golfers dominated the 5A field for the second day and won the school’s 12th State Championship in 14 years.

Coach Brandon Smith summarized a record-setting day, “I’m unbelievably proud f this team from top to bottom.  We were able to build a good lead yesterday and not have a lot of pressure on us today if we weren’t playing our best.  We ended up with 4 girls making the All-State team and I’m pretty sure that has never happened before.

Those 4 All-Staters are senior, Gracyn Burgess, freshman Karlee Vardas, and 8th graders, Isabella Rawl and Molly Hardwick.  They finished individually in the Top 10 and combined to beat the closest competition, Boiling Springs, by 49 strokes.

Despite the rainy and windy weather for Monday’s Round 1, Lexington emerged with a +11 which gave them a 34 stroke lead.  Under sunny skies on Tuesday, they extended that lead en route to the title.

The overall individual champion was Spartanburg’s Elle Johnson who shot a pair of 71’s for a 2-under-par finish.  She defeated runner-up Emily Dunlap of Mauldin by 3 strokes.

Gracyn Burgess finished 3rd overall, carding 71 and 75 for a 2-over par 146.  Just 1 stroke behind was Isabella Rawl who shot 75-72 for a 3-over 147.  Karlee Vardas scored 74-78 for a +8, and Molly Hardwick rounded out the scorers with a 79-82, 17-over par.  8th grader Kennedy Gooding and senior Hannah Stephenson combined for round of 84 and 88.
