Girls Varsity Golf · On The Verge: Ladies Open Big Lead In State Championship!

Day 1 of the 5A State Championship match is in the books and the perennial favorites have a commanding lead.  The 16 qualifying teams had to contend with intermittent rain and wind at the Country Club of Lexington, but the Lady Wildcats emerged with a +11,  34 strokes better than their nearest competitor.  Round 2 will begin tomorrow morning at 9:00 with a forecast of much better weather.

Coach Brandon Smith was pleased with the effort today, “I’m very proud of our team.  They played well in difficult conditions and have put us in position to win another championship.”  Should Lexington succeed tomorrow, it would be the school’s 12th state title in the past 14 years.

At the top of the individual leaderboard was Lexington senior, Gracyn Burgess, who fired a 1-under-par, 71.  Elle Johnson of Spartanburg, competing only as an individual, matched Burgess with a 71 and is tied for 1st.
