Multiple Teams · Dominant D! Lexington Shuts Out Flora, 21-0

Defensive Coordinator Will Newill was pleased with the tenacity of his defense Friday evening.  The visiting Flora Falcons managed only 9 first downs and 3 of those were achieved by virtue of penalties.  The leading rusher was quarterback Josh Heatley who ran for 30 yards.  Heatley completed just 8 passes in the game for 38 yards.  The total offense for Flora was 93 yards but 46 of those came in the 4th quarter when the game’s outcome had largely been decided.

With the game scoreless, Lexington began their third possession on their own 45 yard line with a double pass, Chase Crouch to Mitchell McGee, then McGee to Alston Stewart for a 31 yard gain.  The Cats then ran 7 consecutive times, the last a 1-yard touchdown run from Parker Vancoutren.  Matthew Waller was good on the extra point and the Cats were up 7-0.

Lexington maintained the 7-point lead until late in the 3rd quarter.  After Flora struggled to move the ball on their second possession of the 2nd half, they lined up in punt formation.  Heavy pressure from the Lexington defense forced punter Neal Weaver to scramble then attempt to run the ball, but he was tackled by Chandler Corley for an 8 yard loss and the Cats began a drive from the Falcon 20.  Three consecutive runs by Jordan Hiller found the end zone and after a Matt Waller extra point, the margin was 14 points.

Wildcat pressure on the punter continued on the following Falcon series and resulted in a unique outcome.  On 4th and 22 from their own 18, Weaver lined up for another punt.  He never had a chance.  Cat defenders were pursuing from all directions.  Weaver scrambled then retreated to the end zone and attempted to get a kick off.  He was successful in booting a short, high punt, but Alston Stewart went high to catch it on the goal line and leaned forward for the touchdown to increase the lead to 21-0.

Lexington held on for the shutout and improved their record to 2-0.  Head Coach Perry Woolbright commented on the win, “Good battle tonight by my boys.  Defense played lights out.  Got to continue to get better.”  His team will face a challenge from a very good Brookland-Cayce team next Friday.  The Bearcats defeated Airport 42-21 on Friday and are undefeated after 2 games.
