The 2017 Lower State Final was a game of missed chances for the Lady Wildcats. At several points in the match, they had chances to build on their lead. There were more scoring chances in the overtime periods but, although the Cats played well, they could not find the net.
Overall, Lexington recorded 19 shots to 7 by Wando. Likewise the shots on goal were lopsided at 11-6. The Wildcats had 11 corners to 2 for the Warriors. With just over 2 minutes left in the match they clung to a precarious lead.
Just 3:19 into the match, Megan Classer fired one into the net to give Lexington a 1-0 advantage. Despite being outplayed most of the way, Wando hung in and caught a break with just minutes to play in the second half. A red card was called against Lexington with 2:13 left on the clock and Wando was awarded a penalty shot. Sami Meredith easily made the shot to tie the match and send it to overtime.
As a consequence of the red card, Lexington would also be forced to play the rest of the way with one less player.
The 1-1 tie went to overtime. In the first 10-minute period the Lady Wildcats had 4 solid scoring chances. Three were saved and the other made it into the net but was called back due to an offside call. In the second 10-minute, the Cats again were impressive at both end of the field. Two more scoring chances were saved. Suddenly it was down to 5-minute golden goal overtime periods.
As the 1st of the 5-minute periods was drawing to a close, Sami Meredith had an open look from 10 yards out on the left side and drilled a shot through for her second goal and the game winner.
Lexington finishes the regular season with a 21-3 record. They will graduate 6 players. Thanks to the following for their commitment to Wildcat Soccer and good luck to each in their future endeavors.
