It took two comebacks Friday night to beat the upset-minded Lady Foxes 3-2 and clinch the Region 5 title.
Dutch Fork got on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 9:32 mark of the first half. Despite a total of 6 shots on goal by Mary Katherine Waters, Katie Reeves, and Julia Gherardi, Lexington was unable to find the net and the Foxes took a 1-0 advantage to the halftime break.
The Cats tied up the match in the 6th minute of the second half with a goal by junior forward Jessica Fedorka. Julia Gherardi picked up the assist.
Dutch Fork responded with a score less than 2 minutes later to retake the lead 2-1. But in the 18th minute Lexington put on the pressure, unleashing 2 solid shots on goal. It was a preview of what was coming. At 24:44, Megan Classer’s header tied up the contest at 2 apiece. Mary Katherine Waters assisted on the goal. Eight minutes later, Classer struck again off an assist from Julia Gherardi. The Cats held the lead the rest of the way and posted a 3-2 victory and a Region 5 championship.
Megan Classer’s second goal of the match was her 20th of the season and the 91st in her Lexington career, just 1 shy of the all-time school record.
The Lady Wildcats head into spring break with a 14-2 record and are undefeated at 10-0 in region play. They will host Blythewood on Tuesday, April 18.
