Lexington opened the post-season at West Ashley High School on Wednesday evening. After battling the home team in a tight game, the Wildcats found themselves down 46-40 midway through the 3rd quarter. Coach Bailey Harris called a timeout and his team responded with a 10-0 run to take a 50-46 lead. But the Cats could not break away as their opponents tied it at 54 after 3.
The teams traded baskets for 3 minutes of play in the 4th before Lexington took the lead for good at the 4:58 mark, 62-60. After a defensive stop and a Caleb Shackleford dunk, the lead ballooned to 4 points with less than 4 minutes to go. The Cats answered West Ashley scores and were a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line down the stretch as they emerged with a 71-66 win and punched a ticket to Round 2 at Sumter on Saturday evening. The Cats are now 21-6 on the season.
Sumter advanced to the second round with a 77-58 decision over Spring Valley. The Gamecocks upped their season record to 19-6.
Lexington was especially accurate from the field, hitting on 26 of 47 shots for 55%. Senior All-Stater Darius Bryant scored 19 points and now stands at 1605 in his LHS career. Will Haney netted 17 while Caleb Shackleford added 14.
Coach Harris was pleased with his team’s focus. “We couldn’t seem to stop them, but got balanced scoring and some big plays to pull out the road win. I was proud of our mental toughness tonight.”
