Both the Wildcat Girl’s and Boy’s Cross Country teams are returning key talent that should lead to exciting and highly competitive seasons this Fall.
Last year, Coach Matt Oberly’s girls finished 2nd in the Region and ran to a 4th place finish in the Mid State Qualifier but had a rough afternoon at the 4A State meet. This Fall, the Lady Wildcat runners will have a wealth of talent to improve on their 2015 finishes.
Coach Oberly is excited at the combination of experience and youth on his roster. The core group all competed at the Varsity level last year and bring that valuable experience to the starting line. The 2016 team will be led by Senior Courtney White, and Juniors Rachel Cousins and Susanna Hutto. A speedy underclass group includes Freshmen Mackenzie Yoder and Janie Reed, Sophomore Katie Koesters, and 8th Grader Cassie Fabian.
The Ladies begin their season at the Providence Invitational in Charlotte on August 27.
Although the Boy’s team lost key team members to graduation, their returners are ready for the challenge. Gone are Hunter Janus, Trey McClary, Miles Fowler, and Will Bugeski. But returning are two experienced Seniors, Weston Hutto and Dan Bell, and two strong Juniors, Jeff Keene and Thomas Sutcliffe. According to Coach Bailey Harris, “5-10 other boys should be competitive and give us depth. I like this team’s chances to compete.”
During the past season, the Wildcat Boys won the Region championship, finished 1st of 19 teams at the Midstate Qualifier, and ended with a 10th place finish at the 4A State Championship.
Like the Ladies, the Boy’s runners will begin their competitive season at the Providence Invitational in Charlotte on August 27. Both the Boys and Girls will host four meets this year at LHS:
August 31 – Lexington County Meet
September 31 – Body Shop Invitational
October 8 – Run Hard XC Meet
October 19 – Region 5-5A Championship
