Spring Valley and Lexington met Saturday afternoon as both teams fought to extend their seasons in the state 4A playoffs. In their first games the Wildcats were beaten in a heartbreaker by Stratford while Spring Valley fell to Carolina Forest.
Spring Valley struck first with an unearned run in the second inning. Two hits and a Lexington error allowed the Vikings to put one on the board. Through three innings the score was 1-0 as the Cats managed only two base runners, a walk to Cole Lemacks and a single from Bubba Bowers.
All of the Lexington scoring would come in the home half of the fourth. Cole Lemacks and Brice Kirven led off the inning with singles, both to left field. Bubba Bowers reached on a fielder’s choice play at second base that was not in time to load the bases with no outs. A David Jacobs’ RBI single to center brought Lemacks across the plate and kept the bases full. Walks to Rhett Bane and Jared Kirven then brought Brice Kirven and Bubba Bowers home to make it 4-1. After an infield popout, Dalton Lansdowne reached on a fielder’s choice that scored courtesy runner, Austin Muse. With 4 innings complete, the Cats led 5-1.
There were no serious scoring chances by either team until the top of the seventh. With two outs, Spring Valley loaded the bases but the game ended on Rhett Bane’s fifth strikeout of the afternoon.
With the 5-1 win, Lexington will travel to Stratford on Monday. The Cats will need to win the next three games on the road, each an elimination game.
