In Game 1 of the 4A state playoffs, Lexington scored four runs on seven hits and had a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh. Stratford managed just four hits and one earned run in the game but six errors and five walks allowed them to walk off with a 5-4 win.
In a scoreless game in the fourth inning, Jared Kirven led off with a walk. With one out, Bubba Bowers singled to left field. After Rhett Bane was hit by a pitch, a Zack Smith single scored both Bowers and Bane and the Cats scratched out a 2-0 advantage.
One inning later Lexington put two more runs on the board. Dalton Landsdowne and Jared Kirven each singled. Bubba Bowers reached on a fielder’s choice where Landsdowne was thrown out at the plate. With runners in second and third, David Jacobs singled to center, collecting two RBI’s and it was the Wildcats with a 4-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stratford scored three times to make it 4-3. With two out and none on, they put together three singles and a costly Lexington error.
Lexington looked to add to their lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases with just one out but two straight strikeouts shut down the quest for insurance runs.
The Knights scored two to win the game in walkoff fashion in the home half of the seventh after a hit batsman, a Wildcat error, two consecutive walks, and another error.
Lexington continues play in the 4A state playoff Saturday at home against Spring Valley in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
